DRP: Timeline for Federal Employees 40 Years or Older | 45 Days + 7 Days
Have you ever heard of the Older Workers Benefit Protection Act — the OWBPA? Yeah, it’s a mouthful. But it’s a federal law that protects workers over 40 from being pressured into signing away their rights, especially when it comes to severance agreements. Translation: if you’re over 40 (like me — no judgment, just not giving you my exact age), you’ve got rights. And they matter when someone puts a Deferred Resignation Package (DRP) in front of you.
Let’s Break This Down
You might’ve heard that you had nine days to decide on that first DRP round. And maybe you felt a little panicked. Like, “Wait, am I about to sign something that I can’t take back?” Well, hold on. Here’s the real deal:
If you’re 40 or older, you must be given a 45-day period to review the terms of the DRP before signing. That’s not a suggestion — that’s the law. OPM (that’s the Office of Personnel Management for the uninitiated) spells it out. You’ve got time. And you need to use it wisely.
And here’s the kicker — even after you sign, you still get seven days to change your mind. That’s right. You can revoke your agreement within a week after signing. So don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.
So What Does That Mean for You?
Let’s say you get the DRP offer. And you’re thinking, “If I don’t say yes right now, I’ll lose the chance.” False. You can say yes. You can even submit something in writing that you’re considering it or want to move forward. But the real clock doesn’t start ticking until you actually sign. And even then, you’ve got a safety net — seven whole days to step back and say, “Nope, I changed my mind.”
That should take some pressure off. Seriously, breathe easy. You’ve got time to think, to talk it through, and to figure out what’s best for you.
