Feeling Stressed About Your Job? Read This.
Federal employees, I know these are challenging times. Job security may feel shaky, and the weight of uncertainty can be mentally, emotionally, and even spiritually draining. So what can you do to cope?
I want to share something with you that was written 2,000 years ago, words from someone much wiser than me.
“So never be anxious about the next day, for the next day will have its own anxieties. Each day has enough of its own troubles.” — Matthew 6:34
If you don’t know what the future holds, how can you spend today worrying about it?
The Power of Gratitude in Hard Times
My very first business partner in this industry—almost 17 years ago—shared a piece of wisdom from his father, who served in special ops in the military. He used to say:
“Be grateful you’ve got three slops and a flop.”
At first, I had no idea what that meant. He explained: “Slops” were meals—sometimes not very appetizing, but meals nonetheless. And a “flop” was simply a dry place to lay your head. Three meals and a place to rest. That’s enough to carry you through.
Think about that. Many people in the world are grateful for just one meal. If you’ve got two or three meals and a roof over your head, you are living in abundance compared to much of the world.
Prepare Without Worrying
Now, does that mean you don’t prepare for tomorrow? Not at all.
You can and should prepare for the “what-ifs.” Build a framework, know your benefits, and understand your rights—especially if your federal job does come to an end. Sometimes, that information isn’t readily available at your agency, but it’s worth finding out.
And while you prepare, carry an attitude of gratitude. The sun rises and sets on all of us, and often it’s blue skies and sunshine. Waking up each day and saying, “I’m going to deal with what I’ve been given today”—that makes you radiant.
A Personal Wake-Up Call
Recently, while I was in Mexico, I nearly drowned. It was a close call—far too close. And it put everything in perspective.
Life itself is a blessing. If you are alive, if you are well, if you have enough to sustain you—you are already far ahead of what fear wants you to believe.
Being prepared isn’t foolish. But being consumed by worry robs you of today’s gift.
Finding Blessings in Disguise
Losing a federal job might feel devastating in the moment. But it could also turn out to be a massive blessing in disguise. Sometimes what feels like an ending is really the beginning of a new adventure waiting for you.
